What’s up boys n girls?! I have been getting tons of messages on Live asking about my FFA Tips. I don’t think I have ever posted my FFA Tips as a blog so here you go! Feel free to comment…
FFA (Free For All) Tips… Lone Wolves/Rumble Pit
Tip One
Everyone knows this point, yet I’m still amazed how much people don’t follow it, DON’T GET MAD, it effects your game greatly. Just because you missed your melee or someone did something stupid don’t get upset over it, because it effects your game more than you think it does. Just take a deep breath in and out and remind yourself its FFA, stuff like this is bound to happen.
Tip Two
Never give up, this sort of relates to the first point, because when people are getting unlucky, they tend to get mad and end up RUSHING like crazy and just dieing consistently and going 1 for 1, which isn’t good. FFA is part luck, my most recent example is I’ve been down by 16 kills from 1st, and I was in last, yet I was still able to place second because i didn’t change the way i was playing, I didn’t start rushing in fury, I just breathed in and out reminded myself that it was just bad luck and that I would get over it. I continued playing normal until my good luck started to kick in which happened when I went on a rampage which is very rare when playing with other good players. Don’t get upset if you’re in last because you can still place top 4. Trust me, I have done a hundred times.
Tip Three
People tell you to play with players that are better than you; this is partly true and partly not. Playing with people that have better individual skill helps your individual skill, but you also adapt to their playing style which also helps, but being accustomed by the way they play is not that smart. A good FFA player isn’t always the person with the greatest individual skill of the group, it’s the person who can adapt to the playing styles of different players the quickest and still be able to place top 4 consistently with different players.
If you want to become a better FFA player you can’t play with the same people over and over, you should play people at all skill levels at FFA, not to get you better individually, but to see all the different types of playing styles.
I’m sure one time or another you’ve heard someone say “BLAH I can’t play with this room of bad kids who don’t know who they’re doing!” when in reality that person is just adapted to the playing styles of the people he always plays with. Your best bet to becoming better at adjusting yourself to the play style of the FFA your in, is to play with as many different people as you can even if they are not as good individually as you are. Because there’s a good chance if you ever go to an MLG FFA event, not everyone is going to play the same.
Tip Four
Don’t Fool Yourself, I’ve been in many FFA games in the past that people will just say “oh i’m not trying”. Sometimes it is true whether the person’s eating or just not playing. If your trying don’t be embarrassed if your losing because your only doing harm to your FFA game, clouding your mentality of becoming better, because if something doesn’t go your way like you getting out BR’d you’ll just think “hey if i was trying I’d destroy that kid!” which will interrupt you trying to think of what you could have done better, also it will lead to a bigger downfall, when you play on LAN and don’t go as far as you planned that you were going to get.
Also, something that relates to this point is the “oh I’m not warmed up,” I’ve used this excuse for my first game that I play that game, plenty of times in the past BUT you have to understand if you use this excuse it will take you longer to “warm-up” because you have the mentality “oh my BR is not warmed up thats why that happened” Now when I warm-up I usually don’t think of it as my warm-up game, I just try the best I can if I don’t place top 4, **** happens. Don’t get mad over it or make excuses that you need to warm-up, because usually it’ll give you the mentality that you still need to warm-up which will make you play worse and worse as the day goes on. Also just because you lose to someone that you can almost always beat; congratulate him, don’t say “ I wasn’t warmed up”. That leads to the next point.
Tip Five
People can lose FFA’s…. just because you have beaten pros in the only FFA you have ever played with them doesn’t necessarily your better than them at FFA, so don’t let it get to your head, your a better FFA player than someone if you consistently place higher than them in many FFA’s and can adapt better to certain situations and playing styles, than they can. So just because you beat that certain Player in ONE FFA, doesn’t mean your better so don’t let it get to your head.
Tip Six
Reevaluate Your Style… We’ve heard this many times, that when you die, evaluate what you could have done to avoided that situation, and what could you have done better. Very few people actually do this, for example I used to have a bad habit of when i spawned at needles on The Pit I would Rush Rockets right away, which is really bad because 80% of the time you will get Sniped in the back of the head from the snipe tower if you are playing against good players. So I thought to myself, (whenever I spawn at BR or Needles I should wait til the Snipe is occupied before continuing my rush) Of course there are exceptions to this rule such as if there are only 4 or 5 Players in the match then I Rush regardless while chucking nades into Invis. hallway. So Evaluate your choices when you die and make sure your first moves are the smartest based on the map and amount of Players in the Game etc etc.
Tip Seven
Be unpredictable, yes FFA is adapting to other people’s playing styles, but being unpredictable helps tremendously, when people are trying to adapt to the way you play FFA, which always leaves them guessing giving you that extra edge on your opponents.
Tip Eight
One of the most important points is that you need to have Experience and have Good Mentality, and by experience I mean play FFA’s learn nade spots, learn little spots where you can spawn trap someone while your recovering your shield, For example, if I get a double kill in “Top Gold” on Guardian and have no shield, I know a I should be throwing grenades where the guys land that jump down from the “Blue Room” so that if they do I will take their shields and snap off a quick Headshot.
Having a good mentality will help you tremendously, because if you think your BR sucks it will suck…. If you think your melees are horrible they will be horrible. etc. Also, stop messing around with sensitivities stick to what your used to, stick to what you like, because not only does this mess with your game it also messes with your mentality whether or not you think your BR is good or bad. Anyways back to the point that if you think your melees are horrible, they will be horrible. I know some people (won’t name them) that whenever they get in a melee battle with me they always think they’re going to get out melee’d just because I’ve out melee’ed them OVER AND OVER again during previous FFA’s. Just because you get Out Br’d by so-and-so all the time don’t be upset, just evaluate what you could have done to out BR him, which leads back to the points back up Top.
Tip Nine
Watch VoD (video on demand @ mlgpro.com) to gain valuable experience by watching how Pros play and how they adapt to different playing styles.
Tip Ten
Don’t overplay it, playing too much FFA can cause harm to your FFA game, making you rush more, and not think. This has happened to me so I can relate to it. You may think it’s increasing your endurance but in reality, you’re hurting yourself in the long run. TAKE BREAKS (as in 1-2 day breaks if need be), breaks help your FFA game and mental aspects so that you are fresh and so you play smarter and don’t get frustrutated as much. Also take off your headset, it helps you not get as frustrated hearing annoying people in your ear. Either that or listen to some music if that calms you down. It’s all preference…
I hope these 10 tips help your FFA Game as much as they have mine over the years.
